Fast forward to post-op and the microwave became one of MY most used appliances. I wasn't allowed to lift skillets or bend over to put anything in the oven. My menu consisted almost entirely of Ramen noodles and microwave entrees. (You're welcome, Hormel.)
Since I'm still under restrictions from the surgeon, I'm still using the microwave more than I like. Instant oatmeal and mac and cheese for the grand kids is a staple, for now. And try as I might, I still manage to boil those things over! Instead of the occasional dusting, now I have to actually clean it.
I have found the easiest and most effective way to get the gunk out is to use plain old white vinegar. It truly works! After wiping out the crumbs, I put a glass cup (I use my Pyrex measuring cup) of vinegar in and set the timer for a minute or 2. When the timer goes off, I leave the door shut for a few more minutes to allow the steam to work its magic. A quick wipe down with a paper towel finishes the job perfectly.
Since the cost of vinegar is rising, I don't like to waste it. After I take the cup out of the microwave, I dump it into my coffee maker, tea kettle, or dishwasher. Sometimes I use it to clean the sink faucets. I also put it into the rinse cycle of the towels in the washing machine. Waste not, want not.
