Homesteading With a Toddler

We didn't start turning our property into a homestead (versus an unsustainable country home) until after our kids had grown and moved away. Now that we have grandkids, I usually put homesteading on temporary hold when they come to visit.

Last week I started keeping one of them every weekday while his daycare situation gets fixed. I couldn't stop all my chores for that length of time. And it has been an eye-opening experience! My hat's off to all the homesteading parents!

So far I've learned to get most of the outdoor stuff done early in the morning or late evening while he's gone. I save the tasks that he enjoys "helping" me with (collecting eggs, picking berries, feeding the pets, etc... ) for us to do together. Along with the fun we're having, I've also been working at a different pace. We do things in his timing. We head to each task at breakneck speed and then savor the moment in slllloooowww mmooottiiiooonnn.

At naptime I catch up on the indoor chores. In the heat of the summer this works out well. Plus I can rest up while I snap beans or blog!

We're having a great time!
