Thanksgiving Firsts

I love holiday traditions! And I've reached that stage in my life where I have GET to make some new ones. Last Thanksgiving was the first one where one of my kids was not at the dinner table for the big meal. DS1 was at his military base instead, celebrating with friends. I think I swallowed more lumps in my throat that day- no gravy needed. That empty spot was hard to look at but the course was set- sometimes my family was not going to be with me physically during the special days.

This year only one of my kids will be able to be with us. The Navy still has one of them and two others are being claimed by in-laws. I knew that would be an uncomfortable meal for just the three of us, so I accepted an invitation for us to join my in-laws. For the first time since I've been married, I'm not preparing a Thanksgiving meal. But the dinner we are attending is carry-in. So I am attempting another first- apple pie.

I have never made an apple pie (I know, right?) Hard to believe after 30 years of marriage that I've never made this basic, all-American, dessert. But remember, I raised a crew of good eaters. So when I cook a fruit dessert, I make. a. cobbler. In a big pan.

This evening I'll be looking at apple pie recipes. When I get up in the morning (which won't be before sunrise to stick a big bird in the oven and peel potatoes) I'll relax over my coffee, smell my pie baking and maybe indulge in another first- watching the entire Thanksgiving Day parade without interruption!  Woo Hoo!

I have so much to be thankful for, too much to list. I truly hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving!
