Mystery Plants

I've kind of neglected the garden the last few days. It's too early to harvest anything, we've had a nice amount of rain, and there aren't weeds to pull since we planted on plastic. We did have some unseasonably cold nights not too long ago. At that time, I covered everything I could with feed buckets for protection. Things didn't look too bad when I removed the buckets but I wasn't sure if that would stay the case. Today I had time to mosey around and check on the plants. We lost one zucchini plant and the tomatoes and cucumbers look like they're fighting for dear life. Everything else is fine.

At the edge of the garden was a tire with some kind of growth in it. I didn't remember planting in it but the day we put out the garden was so busy that some of it is a blur in my memory. I also got a horrible sunburn that day so DH planted some things without my help. Luckily, I had a helper to talk to while I worked out what was growing in the tire! Potatoes!

We planted some potatoes in the remains of last year's compost pile and I compared those to make sure I was guessing correctly. We've grown them the old-fashioned way, in a row that we hilled, but our yields have never been awesome so we're experimenting this year. It will be interesting to compare the 2 methods and see which way we'll go in the future.
