Remember when people wore watches? It seems like just overnight watches disappeared, except on people who use them at work. Nowadays when you ask someone the time, out comes their cell phone-if it wasn't already in their hand.
And what about the weather forecast? Remember when the only way to know if there was a chance snow would cause school to be cancelled was to jump out of bed at the crack of dawn to watch the early morning news? (I would cross my fingers and if school was cancelled-right back to bed I went!) Then along came the weather channel and the internet. Now some people can feed their need-to-know-the-temperature addictions 24 hours a day/7 days a week. (ahem DH cough, cough)
We don't have cable or satellite t.v. Instead we get over the air(or Amish TV as my kids like to call it.) Yep, 6 PBS channels (and 2 network channels between midnight and dawn if it isn't raining.) And our internet service is sketchy-meaning we can get online when all the county teenagers are at school and if it isn't raining.
But we do have excellent cell phone service. Well, maybe not excellent- it's only 3G. But it is always there. No dropped calls. No static. Thank you Verizon Wireless!
Normally, I am ok with Sesame Street and a choppy version of Facebook. But winter is coming and I want to be able to know if I'm going to be snowed in or iced over. So my DH very generously got me a smart phone! Woo Hoo!!

I've had it a couple weeks and I can say without a doubt that it is an excellent resource for a homesteader who feels cut off from the rest of the world at times! I feel like I can connect to information any time I need to!
And I'm happy to report that in my hometown it is 8:15 pm and the temperature is 62 degrees.(grin)
