Late Saturday evening, as I was finishing up my mowing, I saw her trucking across the yard as fast as her little legs would waddle. She dove right into the middle of a flower bed and I never saw her come out. So Sunday morning, before Easter service at church, I tiptoed out there to do a little investigating and I found her! She was hunkered down until I got close to take a picture and then she swelled her little self up like a balloon and gave me the evil eye.
Well, I'm no duck expert but my guess is there is an egg or two under her. So I tried to have a little talk with her, you know, explain about how it takes two ducks (a female and a male) to make ducklings. I had terrible flashbacks of talking to my pre-puberty kids who tried to be polite and listen and not laugh until I left the room. But I stammered and sweated and my knees shook a little so I'm not real sure I got the point across. Because when I finished my attempt at a "facts of life" speech, she just stayed there all swelled up and indignant looking.
So today, I tossed a couple of extra (hahahaha!) chicken eggs into her nest just to see if she will hang around long enough to actually hatch something. It's not like I'm going to miss the eggs if nothing comes of it! I think it will be a fun learning experience.....
