How sad is this? Eleven lonely old apples in the bottom of my fruit basket.
I picked this old basket up at a thrift store in some small town in Pennsylvania years ago. And it has been on my kitchen table ever since. And I love to fill it up with fruit-apples, bananas, oranges(occasionally, because they are too acidic for me,) kiwi, plums, peaches... You name it, I stick it in the fruit basket. I think I like the arranging of the different colors and textures. When I see a piece of fruit at the grocery store, I am already mentally placing it in my fruit basket.
Don't ask me why I bought this many apples. I'm not sure. Sometimes I shop in "family of six" mode even though the kids are gone and DH is seldom home. I think I must have been on auto pilot! In any case, I couldn't possibly eat all these apples before they go bad and I want to put new fruit in the basket AND I don't want to mix old and new fruit so.....
Apple Crisp it is:
1. Mix topping ingredients until crumbly- I don't really measure accurately for this recipe so put the word "approximately" before each ingredient:
1 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup flour
2 cups rolled oats
1 stick butter
1 Tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

2. Peel, core and slice apples and place in buttered 9"x13" baking pan. (Note-I use a sandwich bag that is on its last leg over my fingers to keep the butter from sticking to me!)
3. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the top.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes-til topping is browned and apples are tender.
Yummy! And now I'm off to buy some fruit for my fruit basket. Um, no apples though!
